Terapia fotodynamiczna PDT ujęta jest w dziale światłolecznictwo i stanowi element świadczeń specjalistycznych w zakresie naświetlań miejscowych. PDT obejmuje terapie, które wykorzystują światło do wywołania reakcji organizmu na poziomie komórkowym. Dzięki złożonym procesom fizykochemicznym, które zachodzą w tkankach po aktywacji światłem zaaplikowanego wcześniej światłoczułego związku chemicznego następuje zniszczenie struktur komórkowych w obszarze zmian patologicznych.

Zastosowanie PDT wymaga wcześniejszej kwalifikacji pacjentów na podstawie specjalistycznej diagnostyki – określenia jednostki chorobowej i fazy choroby oraz kwalifikowanej obsługi medycznej.

Terapia PDT są to zabiegi miejscowe przy użyciu światła i fotosensybilatora (czynnika fotouczulającego).

Producent nie określa fotouczulaczy, które używa lekarz stosujący PDT. Metoda ma zastosowanie w terapii stanów przednowotworowych i dysplastycznych, nowotworów zwłaszcza we wczesnej fazie rozwoju, w terapii stanów zapalnych i trądziku młodzieńczego. Obszary stosowania: skóra, śluzówki jamy ustnej, srom, narządy płciowe męskie.
