Magnetic fields in the diagnostics, therapy and rehabilitation of patients with multiple sclerosis (ms)

Keywords:

multiple sclerosis, physiotherapy, magnetic fields

Summary:

Majority of life processes occur in organisms owing to electromagnetic forces. The fields used in medicine reach the value of intensity from a few picoteslas to 2,5 tesla. Magnetotherapy, magnetostimulation and transcranial magnetic stimulation are physical procedures with the use of magnetic fields. In multiple sclerosis magnetic fields are used in the diagnostics, estimation of the disease progression and of the effects of immunomodulating treatment and in rehabilitation. Nuclear magnetic resonance enables intra vitam imaging of CNS demyelinating lesions in noninvasive and painless way, allowing to establish the diagnosis and then to monitor the results of pharmacotherapy. Magnetic fields of different physical characteristics are used to control the symptoms of multiple sclerosis. The results obtained from studies on the effectiveness of magnetic fields in the treatment of patients with MS are ambiguous. There are reports in literature about both, the advantages resulting from the treatment of MS with magnetic field and the lack of therapeutic effects or even adverse effects. Such contradictory pieces of information suggest the necessity of continuation of studies on indications for the therapy with magnetic field among patients with multiple sclerosis.
